The King of Fighters '99: Millennium Battle starts a brand new storyline – the NESTS saga – with a new hero. K' is a fighter with flame powers created by the mysterious NESTS organization, and he leads the new Hero Team with the cyborg Maxima. Kyo and Iori are no longer the stars; in the arcade they appear as hidden or special characters.

The final boss is Krizalid, a NESTS agent who turns out to be connected to K'. Other newcomers include Whip, the soldier who joins the Ikari team.

How it plays

The big change is teams of four. You pick four fighters: three fight in rounds and the fourth serves as a striker who jumps in for a quick assist attack. KOF '99 also adds two power-up modes:

• Counter mode – unlimited supers for a short time and the ability to cancel moves into specials.
• Armor mode – you take less damage and do not flinch from hits for a short time.

Best characters

• K' – fast, with a great fireball (Ein Trigger) and anti-air (Crow Bites).
• Maxima – a heavy hitter with strong throws.
• Kyo and Iori – still powerful when you unlock them.

Tips

• Use the striker to extend combos or to break your opponent's pressure.
• Activate Counter mode when you have a combo ready – unlimited supers can end a round fast.
• Krizalid's dash attacks are fast; block and punish instead of jumping.
