About The King of Fighters '94

The King of Fighters '94 is where the series began. SNK took the heroes of Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, Ikari Warriors and Psycho Soldier, added a new hero team led by Kyo Kusanagi, and put them into one tournament of three-person teams. It was a huge risk in 1994 – and it worked so well that a new KOF came out every year for the next decade.

Each of the eight teams represents a country: Japan, Italy (the Fatal Fury team), Mexico (Art of Fighting), Brazil (the Ikari team), China (Psycho Soldier), England (the women's team), Korea and the USA. You fight the other seven teams, then face Rugal Bernstein, who collects defeated fighters as statues.

How it plays

KOF '94 is slower and heavier than later games. You charge your power gauge by holding A + B + C, and a full gauge (or low health) unlocks your desperation move. A + B performs a dodge instead of the roll used from KOF '96 on. Your team order matters: when your fighter wins a round they stay in and recover a little health, while the loser's next teammate steps in.

Best teams for beginners

Fatal Fury Team – Terry's Power Wave and Burn Knuckle are easy to use, and Joe's Hurricane Upper controls space.
Hero Team – Kyo is a strong all-rounder, Benimaru zones with lightning and Goro Daimon throws hard.
Art of Fighting Team – Ryo and Robert hit hard and have simple fireball and uppercut commands.

Tips

Use the dodge (A + B) to slip past fireballs and punish recovery.
Charge your gauge when the opponent is far away; a full gauge makes your attacks stronger.
Rugal's Genocide Cutter punishes careless jumps – stay on the ground against him.
