About The King of Fighters 2001

The King of Fighters 2001 concludes the NESTS saga. It came out at a difficult time: SNK had gone bankrupt, and the game was developed by the Korean company Eolith with Brezzasoft. The result is a KOF with a different flavor – faster, combo-heavy and full of new characters.

Newcomers include Angel, K9999, May Lee and Foxy, and the story ends with the NESTS leader Igniz, one of the most overpowered final bosses in the series.

How it plays

The striker system becomes fully flexible. You still choose four characters, but before each match you decide the fighter/striker ratio: one fighter with three strikers, four fighters with no strikers, or anything in between. Fewer fighters means more power and more assists. Combos are long and you can cancel supers into other supers with enough meter.

Best characters

• K' and Kula – strong, familiar NESTS heroes.
• Angel – a tricky rushdown character with unique chain attacks.
• Kyo – solid and easy to learn.

Tips

• Try a 3 fighter / 1 striker setup first; it feels closest to classic KOF.
• Save power for super cancels at the end of combos.
• Against Igniz, be patient and punish his big attacks – he hits extremely hard.
