About Metal Slug

The original Metal Slug (1996) is where the legend began. Developed by Nazca for SNK's Neo Geo, it follows Marco Rossi and Tarma Roving of the Peregrine Falcons as they fight through six missions against General Morden's rebel army. What made it stand out was the art: every soldier, tank and explosion is hand-animated with incredible detail and humor. Enemy soldiers chat, panic and run away; bearded prisoners of war wave and hand you supplies when you cut them free.

At the heart of the game is the SV-001 Metal Slug, a small tank that can jump, fire its cannon in any direction and survive a few hits. Getting it through a stage in one piece is half the fun.

Weapons and items

H – Heavy Machine Gun: the best all-round weapon.
R – Rocket Launcher: homing rockets for tanks and bosses.
F – Flame Shot: short range, huge damage.
S – Shotgun: devastating up close.
Grenades: throw them at groups of soldiers and armored targets.

Why play it today

It is shorter than the sequels, but tighter and more focused. There is almost no slowdown, the pacing is perfect for a one-sitting run, and every boss – from the giant bomber to the final fortress – is a showpiece of 90s pixel art. It is also a great co-op game: two players can clear it together in under an hour.

Tips

Free every prisoner – they drop weapons and bonus points.
Stay inside the SV-001 as long as possible and jump out just before it explodes.
Walk into soldiers to knife them; it is faster than shooting at point blank range.
