The NES Double Dragon II: The Revenge (1989) shares its name and opening with the arcade game – Marian is gunned down by the Shadow Warriors – but it is a completely different game, built from scratch for the NES. And it is the one many players call the best Double Dragon of the 8-bit era.

Billy and Jimmy fight through nine missions full of platforming traps and tough bosses, ending in a confrontation with the Shadow Master.

How it plays

• Full two-player co-op in story mode, with or without friendly fire (Mode A / Mode B).
• Direction-based attacks like the arcade version: attack left or right.
• Powerful special moves: the Hyper Knee and the Cyclone Spin Kick, both performed with precise jump-and-attack timing.
• Three difficulty levels: Practice (first three missions only), Warrior and Supreme Master.

Tips

• Learn the Hyper Knee – the timing takes practice, but it knocks down most enemies in one hit.
• Choose Mode A with a friend to avoid hitting each other.
• Moving platforms and traps in the later missions kill more often than enemies – take them slowly.
