About Street Fighter II: Champion Edition

Street Fighter II: Champion Edition (1992) was Capcom's first big update to Street Fighter II, and it answered what every player wanted: you can play as the four bosses. Balrog's boxing rushdown, Vega's claw and wall dive, Sagat's Tiger Shots and M. Bison's Psycho Crusher were suddenly in your hands, bringing the roster to 12 fighters.

Champion Edition also allowed mirror matches – Ryu against Ryu, Guile against Guile – for the first time, with alternate colors to tell the players apart.

What changed

• 12 playable characters, including the Grand Masters.
• Mirror matches with alternate costume colors.
• Rebalancing across the cast, with adjusted damage and new tools for some fighters – Chun-Li, for example, got her Kikoken fireball.

Who to try

• Sagat – long-range Tiger Shots and a devastating Tiger Uppercut.
• M. Bison – fast charge attacks that pressure from across the screen.
• Balrog – simple, aggressive and very strong up close.

Tips

• Sagat's high and low Tiger Shots keep most characters out – learn to jump or block both.
• Charge characters (Guile, Balrog, M. Bison) should hold back or down while blocking, so a special is always ready.
• Mirror matches are the best way to learn a character: you see your own weaknesses from the other side.
