About Super Contra
Super Contra – released in North America as Super C – is the direct sequel to the NES Contra, and many players think it is the better game. Bill and Lance return to stop the alien invasion, now led by the creature Red Falcon in a new form. The action is faster, the sprites are bigger and the bosses are some of the most memorable on the NES.
The biggest change is the top-down stages. Some levels switch to an overhead view, where you walk up the screen shooting in all directions – a nice break from the side-scrolling action.
Weapons
The classic power-ups return: S (spread), M (machine gun), L (laser) and F (fire ball, which now explodes into a spread on impact), plus B for a barrier and R for faster shots.
Cheats
In the North American version, press Right, Left, Down, Up, A, B on the title screen, then Start to begin with 10 lives. Super Contra is a little more forgiving than the first game, but you will still need them.
Tips
- In the top-down stages, keep moving diagonally – enemy fire comes from every side.
- The spread gun is still king; the upgraded fire ball is a strong second choice.
